Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the temporary position of Non-Revenue Water Technician II. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Senior Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Technician.
The candidate will be required to ensure the effective technical delivery of leakage detection and the achievement of annual NRW reduction targets. The candidate will also be required to support, mentor and coach junior NRW reduction department staff in all aspects of leakage detection and water loss management whilst ensuring effective quality control and safety compliance.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Primary responsibility is to conduct leak surveys utilising a variety of acoustic equipment, i.e. data loggers, correlators, ground microphones.
- Evaluating meter inaccuracies as they relate to NRW.
- Setting-up, downloading and interrogating leakage detection equipment as necessary, e.g. programming of loggers, setting up probes, pressure loggers etc
- Maintaining equipment, troubleshooting problems with equipment, obtaining quotes and preparing Requisitions for repair as required.
- Participating in the collection of flow and pressure logging data to meet reporting targets, downloading and presenting in Excel.
- Ensuring that all changes (or anomalies) to the Network are recorded and passed to the relevant system owner (e.g. Drawing Office) for updating and ensuring that details shown for all systems are current.
- Tracing and marking the location of distribution system appurtenances.
- Geo-referencing of water network appurtenances using GPS equipment
- Carrying out nighttime leakage surveys as necessary.
- Collecting, recording, analysing and interpreting field data to pinpoint leaks and compiling pinpointed leaks and presenting in Excel.
- Generating work orders when leaks are identified.
- Carrying out high consumption investigations on customer service pipes and advising the customer accordingly.
- Working with the NRW Team to identify/improve leakage operational procedures.
- Undertaking valve operations by agreement with the Engineer to facilitate mains shutdowns, rezoning or step testing activities.
- Researching, compiling and providing engineering data and reports as required.
- Providing technical support and assistance to the Senior NRW Technician as required.
- Any other related duties as assigned by the Senior Non-Revenue Water Technician.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of an Ordinary Technical Diploma or Associate Degree in Building, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline together with at least three (3) years’ experience in an Engineering environment.
- Practical leakage detection or water distribution network operation and maintenance experience would be an asset. OR
- Certification in draughting, particularly in building and mechanical draughting and mapping, together with five (5) years’ experience in the environment.
Knowledge of surveying and drafting techniques, related technologies and computer applications for draughting.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Good basic understanding of hydraulics and water distribution systems, ability to read and work from distribution network records in both electronic and paper format.
- Must possess a driving license.
- Good computer literacy (e.g. competency in Microsoft Word, Excel and AutoCAD).
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good hearing is essential.
- Mathematical skills to perform technical calculations.
- Knowledge of leak detection technology and techniques.
- Good problem-solving skills.
- Awareness of Health & Safety, policies and standards.
