The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) is seeking to fill the position of Geographic Information Systems/Computer-Aided Design Technician [GIS/CAD Technician].

 The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Senior Non- Revenue Water Technician in charge of the area to which you are assigned.

The candidate will be responsible for the collection and analysis of geographical data using computer software.  The candidate will also be required to support engineering and other BWA staff in the areas of computer-aided drafting, mapping, and various engineering tasks associated with planning, designing, constructing and maintaining the BWA’s infrastructure.  The BWA’s infrastructure consists primarily of sanitary sewer, water and drainage facilities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Creating maps and graphs with the use of specific GIS software systems is the prime responsibility;
  • Utilizing computer-aided-drafting (CAD) effectively to produce engineering drawings, construction plans, and various drawings/maps for both internal and external customers;
  • Analyzing data collected from varying sources, such as censuses, satellite imagery, surveys and existing maps in order to create new charts, graphs and maps that are relevant to their clients’ needs;
  • Using the appropriate tools (e.g., GPS instruments) to capture, model and analyze spatial data (e.g. ArcGIS or ArcServer);
  • Creating, maintaining, and updating electronic records, departmental databases (i.e., street and utility infrastructure, asset management, infrastructure maintenance, etc.);
  • Locating and obtaining existing information databases, performing fieldwork to collect information, and performing statistical analyses of existing data;
  • Meeting with stakeholders in order to discuss their needs, project requirements or anticipated output;
  • Locating or developing new applications and software that will help to provide a technological boost to the department’s efficiency. This may include better databases, new technologies and other computer systems that make GIS duties simpler, easier and more accurate;
  • Coordinating with the IT department to ensure efficient hardware, software, and network operations related to GIS/CAD technology;
  • Assisting with the development of written policies and procedures related to GIS/CAD database information; and
  • Providing technical support and assistance to the Engineer as required.
  • Any other related duties as assigned by the Senior Non-Revenue Water Technician.

Education and Experience

  • BSc degree in Geography, Computer Science, Surveying or related discipline with certification in GIS, with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience practicing GIS and mapping.
  • Knowledge of spatial analysis, cartography, geo-computing and remote sensing as well as GPS and measurement analysis.
  • Experience in digitizing and data manipulation procedures for geographic information systems.

Knowledge/Skills Required

  • Knowledge of symbols and terminology used in civil, architectural or electronic engineering drawings.
  • An above-average knowledge of geography and excellent mathematical skills to perform technical calculations.
  • Must be able to read and interpret maps (e.g., distribution network records in both electronic and paper format).
  • Possess a valid driving license.
  • Computer literate (e.g., competency in Microsoft Word, Excel and AutoCAD).
  • Must be able to communicate information and findings to individuals who are not familiar with the GIS industry.
  • Must be able to perform duties in chronological order to achieve desired results.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Full awareness of the Health & Safety, Human Resources, Environmental and Quality Assurance policies and standards.
