Brief On The Barbados Water Rehabilitation Project (BWIRP) – CAF 

The Barbados Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project (BWIRP) is jointly funded by the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Government of Barbados.   On December 24, 2019, the Loan Contract No. CFA – 011072 was signed between the Government of Barbados and CAF. The Barbados Water Authority is the Executing Agency for the project.

This project is in alignment with the Barbados Water Authority Strategic Plan 2016 – 2021, strategic imperatives listed below:

    • Reduce non-revenue water
    • Enhance and update operational infrastructure
    • Implement water resource sustainability projects

The Project aims to support the planning of the sector and improve the quality, reliability, and efficiency of Barbados’ potable water and wastewater system that benefits approximately 82,000 inhabitants. The projects’ main outcomes will be the rehabilitation and optimisation of existing infrastructure, improved water and wastewater systems reliability, the reduction and control of unaccounted water, and the institutional strengthening of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) through strategic planning and performance monitoring and evaluation.

Key outputs of the Project will be realised through the implementation of:

    1. Upgrades to the physical structure of BWA’s pumping stations, and tanks
    2. Provision of measures to control turbidity at the Bowmanston pumping station
    3. Provision of backup power generation for one potable water pumping stations; and
    4. The preparation of Potable Water and Sanitation Master Plan.
